3rd day of AIARE 1 Avy class (shoutout to Dave & Rob @ NEM for a great week - highly recommend this course) for our SAR team so we headed out on a little adventure for our student-led field day. Observed signs of a natural avalanche in the ravine which redirected us into our Plan B of heading up the LH Summer Route. We used snowshoes up to about 4300 feet when we ran into an exposed section of avalanche debris. Hard ice with limited snow for traction on top. Would not recommend crossing this without crampons, a mountaineering axe, and the knowledge of how to properly use them. Our plan for the day did not necessitate carrying this equipment, so we turned back here. Wanted to put this report in for those who may be considering this route yet only have basic winter traction (microspikes).
Sidebar: as usual, it is easy enough to bareboot up to HoJo’s if that is your goal for the day. |
