Beautiful windy day on Madison! Valley Way is very well packed up to the hut and we were fine with spikes. Above the hut, it’s a choose your own adventure—at various points snowshoes or crampons would have been helpful, but most of it was more comfortable in spikes. The blowing snow makes it difficult to follow a packed trail and there are some deep drifts along the trail, with some blue ice peaking out from under the powder in a couple spots. Having done it today, I think crampons would be my preferred option. [Always bring snowshoes when venturing above treeline in winter] |
