Unreal day today to loop the Sisters and Chocorua.
Lower part of the trail is solid and can be done with spikes or snowshoes. Dealer’s choice. Below the Falls loop, the footbed has quite a few postholes that aren’t going away until the next storm.
Trail to the falls is well packed. The steeps had super grippy snow, so they were no problem.
Above the upper junction from the falls, the trail is pretty pristine. GREAT snowshoeing up to the junction of Champney Cutoff.
Champney Cutoff to Middle Sister is solid. We saw some tracks on Middle Sister Trail to Chocorua, so we decided to stomp that trail out proper. Still a little unconsolidated, but it’s well broken.
Ditched the shoes at the junction with West Side, and used spikes for the summit push. Summit is surprisingly devoid of ice. Nothing but packed, grippy snow. Easy up and down.
Put the shoes back on where we ditched them, and cruised the last 3.2 miles in just over an hour. Easily the best snow we’ve had this year. |
