Comments
Comments: Wore spikes ascending Kelley trail which was well traveled. Donned snowshoes around junction with Lawrence Trail as it was unbroken. Trail difficult to follow in col before ascending to Paugus due to lack of blazing. After lunch at the viewpoint, we headed to the true summit of Paugus. Started bushwhack where trail comes closest to the summit, at around 3000'. Had to break through a band of spruce but otherwise the line we took was not too thick. Found the canister. Last person to sign the register was Oct 2023. We finished the whack around 3:30p and made it out by 5:45p, using headlamps the last 30 min. Old Mast trail was ruined by postholes and made the descent in snowshoes tiring because we had to concentrate where we stepped. Had some ankle turns. It was an exhausting 8 miles due to unbroken trail, the bushwhack, and the postholes.
