Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Starr King, Mt. Waumbek, NH
Trails
Trails: Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, February 4, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Starr King Road is plowed and parking is available at the summer trailhead. There are a few dips on the road leading up to the parking lot that drivers will want to be careful on. Also, try not to be that guy who parked his rear-wheel drive truck on the unplowed side of Starr King Road and almost took out a sign trying to get out.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Very small streams near the bottom of the Starr King Trail can easily be stepped over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Looks like a few recent blowdowns have been sawed through and the trail is clear now.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Lots of dogs on the trail back on Sunday. Hikers will want to make sure that their dogs are well-heeled or on a leash.
Bugs
Bugs: Thought I saw a gnat on the snow, but accidentally buried it before I could investigate.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing observed.

Comments
Comments: Hiking partner and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather on Sunday and climb something, but at the same time wanted to take it easier than our previous hikes. Waumbek it was. Not one I had climbed in the wintertime yet, so it counted for something. Trail was very well-packed all the way from the parking lot, up to the top of Starr King, and along the ridgeline to the summit of Waumbek. Microspikes were all we needed. We even ran into two hikers who had bare-booted the entire climb up; recommended they get themselves a pair of Hillsounds or Kahtoolas for the next one. Views from Starr King and from Waumbek were delightful, with no clouds covering the northern Presidentials - made for some dramatic pictures. The trail heading east from the summit of Waumbek, going toward the Weeks Range, was broken but a little "dusty". Snowshoes would have been needed for that trek, but would have been nice and fast. Wish we'd had the time!
