A few trees need to be taken care of on Airline, but most of them are frozen into the ground so would be tough to clear before spring. |

Someone found a telescoping Black Diamond pole today and left it at the Appalachia kiosk. There are two random gloves there that were already there in the morning. |

Pick your own traction. We saw folks in Kahtoola microspikes, Hillsounds, snowshoes, and full crampons, as well as bare boots on the way out. Both Valley Way and Airline are well packed. Airline has more postholes than VW, mostly on the edges of the track. I wore crampons on the Madison summit cone because I hate skiing in my snowshoes, but it was a bit of overkill IMHO. Snowshoes were good descending the top of Airline and near the very top of Madison as there were some sections of drifting. |
