Comments
Comments: Well I officially became a hard, hard goofer with my first true winter ascent of Washington. Combination of spikes and snowshoes for the day. Spikes to start, Ammo is nicely packed and not postholed at all really. Steeps on Ammo were manageable.. who was it that recently said "one step forward, two glissades back"? Because it was a bit of that dance up the steep parts. Kept spikes on until way up on the Crawford Path, maybe around the Davis Path jct. It was pretty obvious at this point that snowshoes would be needed - a bit drifty and some unpleasant looking postholes. Crawford Path above treeline was pretty easy to follow/discern. Very little wind! Got up to the summit a few minutes before sunset. It was so beautiful and epic!! A real treat. Took the Cog side trail down, I kept my snowshoes on for the descent - every time I thought about switching to spikes I would encounter another slightly drifty area and then was glad I had the 'shoes on. They were also behaving - not acting like skis, so I felt safe and took my sweet time. Whatever works best for you! A short while from Base Station, right after you cross under the tracks, I saw an enormous bull moose. What I mean is it was pitch black, headlamp on, and this big boy was right at the treeline, a not-so-good 6 feet away from me. Holy spooks. Just a note that they're out there if you're wandering around after dark (or anytime really). This thing was way too close!! But an epic finish to one of my best hikes. All around great conditions!
