It felt like early spring on the Bonds! I got an early start to take advantage of the cold, which meant I could wear spikes up to Bondcliff without any issues as things were very solid and crunchy still. I headed up to Bond in spikes but wished I had snowshoes for a few spots on the climb, and did put snowshoes on at Bond. They were very necessary for the stretch out to West Bond and back, as the melting snow and ice falling from trees made for a somewhat unstable trail. On the way back in the afternoon, the snow on the ridge between Bond and Bondcliff had gotten very mashed potato-y and I left snowshoes on until back in the railroad bed. Bare boots back to trailhead. Trails are in good condition in general. At higher elevation, there are lots of trees bent over into the trail under the weight of the snow and ice on them, which can make for slow going. Not many postholes at this point, but there were some fresh ones headed back down Bondcliff trail in the afternoon. The warm temps this weekend will only make this worse. Overall, a rare February day on the Bonds where I could sit down on the warm rocks and hang out for a while at each summit. |
