Comments: a spectacular day on GW. my go big or go home plan was to get both Washington & Monroe, but I was pretty gassed by the time I got to 6288 so only one summit. If I had somehow miraculously made it over to Monroe and back I would've run out of water before descending. The bright sun, warm temps, and copious amount of sweat had me draining the water bottles. Traction of choice today. I started in snowshoes, Jewell spur is mostly packed, but there were some old postholes. Jewell trail through the trees in good shape, packed. It was very soft in the afternoon and probably got chewed up with by those without snowshoes. Jewell above treeline to the junction with Gulfside is pretty much a rototilled mess. I took my snowshoes off early because I was afraid of tripping on exposed rocks and the conditions were firm enough that spikes got me to the summit. After the sun came out, softening the snow and most hikers in spikes, Jewell became a choppy sloppy mess in the afternoon.
Gulfside was firm, crusty, grippy snow all the way to the top. I was surprised to not see more people on GW. When I got there a bit before noon, a single gentleman was milling about and a woman came and left. Where were all the winter presi traversers?? Descending Gulfside there were more folks, I guess they had snagged Jefferson first. I had Jewell all to myself on the descent.
