All the trails were in great shape today. Temps were at freezing when we started so we headed out in micro spikes with our shoes on our packs. They stayed there for the entire loop! Brook Tr was packed out solid to the N Straightback junction, which had seen less traffic over the last week. The steep climb N Straightback summit was in good shape but I was regretting my decision not to throw on my snowshoes. Televators would have made this climb a bit easier on the calves. Some of the BRT is a snowmobile trail and made for easy ascent of Mt Major. We had the summit completely to ourselves which was very nice even without the views. Weather kept the trails nice and firm. If the sun had decided to come out on our trek, the trails would have become too soft and snowshoes would have been required from N Straightback to the summit. Brook Tr was a pleasant descent today with minimal ice covered bulges through the fairly steep boulder field. Ran in to more snowmobile trail from Jesus Valley trail junction for the remainder of our hike. So nice to come to Mt Major and not encounter one other soul but me and my great hiking buddy today! |
