There is now a large yellow sign stating that NO ONE is allowed on the ski trails before 8:30 am or after 5:30 pm (I think that was the close time ) and ALL users must display a pass. I made it to within 100 yards of the summit before the lifts opened and had a run in with ski patrol at that time. I was asked for my pass and told that I needed to have one to be on the trail. If I had not been within 5 minutes of being off the ski area trails anyway I am sure I would have been asked to leave. Other ski patrol members at the summit said nothing to me even though I stopped for some breakfast in front of the ski patrol hut.
Trails were packed and easy with some balling powder to North Cater.
The trail down North Carter was extremely difficult; nothing but water ice with rocks sticking out, some with a dusting of snow snd some not. I glissaded down most of it but it was extremely difficult and dangerous, I never use a mountaineering axe and didn’t have one but I would recommend one for the conditions on this section.
It was sticky wet snow on top of ice all the way to Moriah and down the Stony Brook Trail, This section of Carter-Moriah had not been used recently and had no tracks. |
