The weather was better than expected for most of the day until about 3 when it started to lightly rain. But the warm temps not only produced raining trees but also unconsolidated snow that resulted in easy postponing even without going off the trail and difficulty for microspikes to properly do their job. If we had to do today over, we would have brought and worn snowshoes for the way down. Fortunately, because we made a loop, we did not come down the Avalon trail from the summit of Avalon--I think it would have been very tricky on a day like today. Finally, there were several groups of women who were sledding down the A-Z trail and the Avalon trail from the junction with A-Z and turned it into a luge course making an already difficult descent more treacherous. This will also not help given overnight weather conditions. I wish there was a movement to ban sleds from hiking trails! |
