Trail up to Cabot was tracked out and solid, perfect for spikes. Lower down was softer and you had to make sure to stay in the center of the snowshoe trench, but it got more solid as the temperature dropped at higher elevations. Snowshoes went on at the peak and stayed on until back at the car. The KRT past Cabot hasn't seen any traffic since the last snow. The snow was icy/crusted over and mostly supportive, until it wasn't. Then you were sinking 12"- thigh deep into the holes. Between snow laden trees, lack of traffic and relatively few/faint blazes, staying on the actual trail was futile. I pretty quickly gave up, took a bearing and followed my compass, crisscrossing and sometimes following the trail. If you can follow my tracks after this next storm, they are fairly direct, but don't necessarily stay on trail. From the Horn, I dropped NNW off the peak to intersect the trail near the pond. Unknown Pond trail has only seen one snowshoer followed by one post-holer - it was an ankle twisting, annoying walk out. Snowshoes are definitely required! Note: a group of snowshoers went in 1/2 mile on Unknown Pond trail and then turned around. If you're planning on going more than that half mile, don't be fooled and think it's tracked out like the Bunnell Notch trail is. |
