Lots of blowdowns on Crescent Ridge Trail -- particularly near the summits of Mt. Crescent and Mt. Randolph. It looks like the December 2023 storm hit the ridge hard. Blowdowns range from saplings to evergreens (spruce?) ten inches in diameter. |

Mt. Crescent Trail was packed all the way from the parking lot to the first junction with Crescent Ridge Trail. I was feeling good about the decision to leave my snowshoes in the car until I got past Mt. Crescent. There's a surprising amount of snow above 2800 feet and the Crescent Ridge Trail hasn't seen much hiker traffic this winter. On the other hand, the area just north of Mt. Randolph is popular with backcountry skiers. Between the meandering ski trails and the blowdowns, it became difficult to stay on trail in that area. Snowshoes would have prevented the occasional post-hole (sorry!).
There were good views from outlooks on Mt. Crescent (north and south) and Mt. Randolph (south only), but the highlight was the view directly into King Ravine from Lookout Ledge. If you want to save the best view for last, do the loop counter-clockwise. |
