Comments
Comments: Good spikes all the way. What a nice change of pace this trail was; traded in steepness for extra miles and had a beautiful time. Trail is all ice at first, remaining fairly icy until the Yellow Jacket ski trail jct. After this junction, Smarts Brook Trail appeared way less traveled and no one had been down there recently. Less and less tracks the farther I went in. There is a "sort of" track set up though, at least firm and not too choppy. Blowdowns were an interesting set of obstacles. The trail has a couple wet sections- dunked my boot up to my ankle into mud. You read that right. I thought it would be frozen enough! Yikes. After you reach the area with the boulders, the trail got wicked postholed. There's a little bit of uphill here and it was ravaged. Getting up was not too bad but slow going down to avoid serious injury. We don't complain about postholes for fun - this was dangerous. A few more postholes the way up and on Sandwich Mountain Trail, some covered with drifted snow and whew that was an adventure. No recent traffic on Sandwich Mtn Trail or from Jennings Peak side. Really great views, long quiet path!
