Comments
Comments: Mt. Kinsman Trail has very little snow below 2,000'--just enough to make spikes necessary. On the ascent, I wore spikes to 3,500'; at that point, I switched to snowshoes as the snow was less consolidated. I wore snowshoes until I returned to that point after summiting both Kinsmans. On the KRT, snowshoes are the better choice as the snow was loose and uncompacted, though a lot of people were wearing microspikes. While they weren't postholing, they were slipping and sliding around in the uncompacted snow. Mt. Kinsman Trail has a lot of postholes off to the sides; stay on the straight and narrow and you'll be fine. Kinsman Ridge Trail is in better shape; few postholes.
