| Comments: |
Rocky Branch is reasonably packed down and fast, with some unconsolidated sections and deep postholes -- particularly around the small stream crossings. Engine Hill bushwhack has deeper, less consolidated snow and some drifts in the glades. Two small and avoidable sections of the glades have exposed water and mud. ISO Express also has deeper, powdery snow. Isolation spur is very steep and the loose powder makes for a quick and slippery descent. Half the folks on trail were also wearing snowshoes -- and doing so made for a fun and relatively fast hike. The other half in microspikes or no traction were postholing considerably and really struggling (e.g. one hiker went in hip deep in the middle of the Engine Hill...). If the conditions hold steady, I'd put this squarely in the category of snowshoes are essential for the duration of the hike. |
