Comments
Comments: The hike in from the road had minimal snow depth underfoot, but I put snowshoes on since there was several inches of fresh powder in the parking spots. Once I hit the more rapid vertical climbing near the cascades, the snow got deep quick. It was easy to follow the trail, one snowshoe-er had beat me up the trail this morning, and there was still an easily recognizable snow trough from those submitting the earlier trip reports this month. The ponds were nice and solid, and were fun to strike across, although there were 1+ foot deep drifts in their middles. The herd-path to the summit was much deeper, and the broad summit area doesn't have any specific set path, and was full of leg swallowing spruce traps. Given the depth of the spruce traps, and all the fresh powder I was knocking off tree branches, I elected not to bushwhack out to any of the nearby trail-less peaks like I'd hope to, but instead went straight back out. There was another pair of hikers striking their way in on my way out, making for 4 tracks to Nancy today, plus a new track laid out on the ol' Bemis fire-tower road. It was snowing all afternoon on and off, as clouds swept through, so while the trail-trough will still be easily followed, the surface of it will certainly have a few loose inches back on top for the next set of snowshoes to compact again.
