Comments
Comments: Basically perfect trail conditions for the Wildcats! We wore snowshoes from the 19 Mile Brook trailhead all the way to the top of the ski lift, where we switched to spikes for the hard-packed descent of Polecat. From the trailhead to the junction with the Carter Dome Trail, spikes are very arguably more appropriate than snowshoes. By about 3,000’, the snow became sufficiently loose that snowshoes were better. The entire Wildcat Ridge Trail, including the steep section, was perfect for snowshoes. It was well broken out and not drifted, but still soft enough that snowshoes were really pleasant. Polecat was, well, typical northeast ski area: hard. Icy. Fine for spikes, but a bit scratchy most of the way down for snowshoes. Definitely recommend getting the Wildcats before that steep section turns icy. It was great today!
