Comments
Comments: Our group hiked out and back via Gorge Brook; it was too windy and too cold to traverse across and down Carriage Road. We had no views but the trail conditions are ideal; my snowshoes went for a ride and we were all in light traction for the duration. The temperature and humidity were just right for the formation of perfect snowflakes, and the upper elevation trees are holding onto large amounts of pure white snow, so we got to hike through Narnia. As if all of this is not good enough, on our descent, at about 4100’, we came across two hikers that pointed out a pair (male and female) of white winged crossbills. The male (red) was particularly striking against the snow on the trees. They told us that they had never seen crossbills up at this elevation, and we felt truly lucky to have stumbled across knowledgeable hikers right at a moment when they were witnessing something amazing. It was a great day!
