Comments
Comments: Trails were in great shape. We walked the short section of route 3 first and then went up the Galehead side of Gale River Loop. We barebooted from the car about a mile in on the trail where we changed over to spikes. Once we hit the steep climb up to Garfield Ridge we switched to snowshoes for the televators. The trail was well packed, so spikes would have worked all the way to the summit of Galehead. We kept our snowshoes on as we headed over to Garfield. Garfield Ridge hadn’t seen any recent activity. A trough was visible, but was filled in with 4-6” light, fluffy snow. The waterfall wasn’t icy at all. We met another hiker coming the other way (also wearing snowshoes) who had done a nice job coming down it. He sidestepped and made a nicely packed, wide track. Snowshoes were great heading up to Garfield and would have been appropriate heading down the top of Mount Garfield Trail. We swapped to spikes, but then found that there were sections of some light drifting. Thankfully, this was a short area. As we neared the summer parking lot, we encountered a hiker heading up in snowshoes so hopefully he cleaned up that top section.
