Overall, this loop is in decent shape. The trails are pretty much concrete, though not smooth. Snowshoes would be useless and the track is currently too narrow for them anyway. The lack of snow is giving way to the ice underneath so spikes are essential; a couple of the scrambles up Percival were icy. Unfortunately, the ridge is peppered with deep postholes that are now frozen solid. They can mostly be avoided but will become more of a hazard after the upcoming storm when they'll be harder to see. This storm will obviously change the conditions in this report.
The short bushwhack to The Sawtooth (Squam Range high point) was mostly supportive but I did break through several times. I went slow and tested each step to avoid any surprises.
It looks like the ladders and cave routes have seen some action but I would use caution for both in winter.
I was hoping for some natural vitamin D today but the sunny forecast didn't materialize until I got back to the car. Of course. :D
A very quiet day here; only saw two other people. The Rattlesnakes lot across the street was also mostly empty. |
