| Comments: |
We wore snowshoes car-to-car. Jewell definitely needed them, especially above tree line and in the descent as things warmed up. Jewell above tree line had been completely blown in and we were lucky to follow the tracks of the snowshoer ahead of us. The track meandered off of the actual trail a few places…sometimes we stayed with the broken track, and sometimes we tried to get back to the actual trail. Pick your poison. Everyone that we saw on Jewell was wearing snowshoes, but none of the hikers that we encountered on Gulfside had on snowshoes. Most were folks doing a traverse wearing Hillsounds. A few were using crampons. Some who came up Lions Head had crampons. Spikes or crampons were the best choice for Gulfside from the Jefferson col to the summit, but snowshoes worked fine. The stretch of Gulfside from Jewell to the col had some heavy drifting and snowshoes were the best choice here. We saw two hikers who had apparently come up Castle, but I didn’t stick around on the breezy summit to verify. Boundary Line had some evidence of use…it looked as though a lone snowshoer went through today. |
