Lower trail was well packed up to the height of land before crossing 3; smooth sailing on snowshoes. Portions may melt out with next week's forecast, but still full coverage for now. From that area, I bushwhacked up the slope and soon hit an old logging road, which I was able to follow for about 700 vertical feet, keeping it until a few dozen feet of the trail. 3-6" of newer snow on top of the previous crust, so very good going.
Some drifting up on the ridge, including a place on the Sosman summit loop where Microspikers were chewing moss off a boulder on the side of the trail to avoid a drift. The upper Mt. Tecumseh Trail summit loop (right) was a mess of postholes, courtesy yesterday's Microspikers. I bailed at the upper turn, following the ridge all the way down to about 2,200 feet. Had to skirt a few cliffs, but otherwise decent woods for White Mountain standards.
Snowpack generally about 2 to 3 feet (a little less down low and a little more in a few places up high).
Beautiful sunny morning with temperatures in the 20s and a bit of wind. |
