Mt Hayes traverse, party of 3. Centennial up, Mahoosic down to rail trail thence out to Route 16 at iron bridge. Trail was mostly firm and well broken out on the ascent, across the summit & down to the big western overlook, only a few post holes, nothing oppressive, easy with spikes. We put on our snowshoes for descent--there were a few old snowshoe and bare boot traces but the snow was unpacked and undermined by water in places (we walked to the side of the trail to avoid breaking through). We largely walked on top of the snow with snowshoes, sinking in here and there. We got off trail in a couple places. Snow is quite deep, crusty but weak, on upper parts of the mountain (stepped off trail couple times & sank to my crotch), inconsistently thin down below with occasional places washed out to soil and stone. We skipped the bottom part of Mahoosic Trail & walked the snowmobiled rail trail directly to the bridge. Passed two other hikers on the ascent. |
