Comments: Route:
Pine Bend Brook > Mt Tripyramid Trail to Middle summit > back the way I came.

Pine Bend Brook: well blazed in yellow. Trench established. Nice, firm footbed this morning so spikes worked best. See water crossing notes above. There was butt sled employment on the steep sections lending to slick, steep ascents with some blue ice protruding through. No problem going up. Snow footbed stayed firm all the way to North Tri summit. Even on the steep ledges on that 0.3 mile summit scramble. Summit cairn is covered in snow but view points are firmly tracked out as well. First time here with clear skies…

On the way down I elected to wear snowshoes. Snow had become tackier than Aunt Martha’s 1990’s fanny pack… that stuff stuck to everything!! But one whack with my poles would knock the hangers off so I could maintain traction on the descent. Snowshoes also permit me to make my own route down to bypass the most steep, slick sections of the upper portions of trail without degrading the landscape. The side traction bars on my snowshoes were super helpful at staying upright on the butt slid sections. Lots of points on the descent that I had to simply turn around and use the crampons on my snowshoes to keep rooted on the trail. Some persons had elected to short cut the switchback. This is fine, if in snowshoes. These persons were not in snowshoes…

Mt Tripyramid Trail: not blazed. Well tracked out trench established. Though windy, temps were well above freezing creating mashed potato snow. Fed up with balling up snow on my spikes, I threw on my snowshoes. Ah… now I can fly! The summit of Middle Tripyramid was reached in little time. You could most certainly use spikes. I loathe balled up snow on traction devices so that was not the route for me. The two lovely, young fellas I met did just fine in their spikes. No on trail postholing.

Nice to encounter you two young guys! Thanks for giving Brutus some love! I hope you were able to make it out to South’s summit. The view from the slide I bet was amazing!
