Comments
Comments: Today was a snowshoe day. Nancy Pond was well packed out in the morning with only an inch or two of slush on the surface. Immediately after the large crossing on Nancy Brook we turned right onto the bushwhack, the abandoned Mt Bemis trail. There was evidence that the bushwhack has seen some use this winter, but really the only tracks on it were from animals. A bear postholed about a quarter mile of it near the beginning. We were able to mostly follow the abandoned trail (especially on the descent), but unfortunately got off trail a few times and did some wallowing in spruce traps. There’s about four feet of snow up high on Bemis…none of it supportive today. On the way down the bushwhack trail had softened up so much that we basically postholed with every step (at least it felt like it). Once back to Nancy Pond Trail, we could move much faster with virtually no postholing. Everything was super soft, though, and snowshoes were 100% necessary.
