| Comments: |
Due to the recent thaw, rain, and then freezing conditions there was a lot of ice throughout most of the trail. Crunchable, wet, hard, round and irregular surfaces - thin black ice, thick blue ice - all kinds. So much ice. The rock steps and steep rock sections were a particularly treacherous frozen ice river, and there were several other steep hard irregular / wavy ice sections. Many of the other easier ice sections were enjoyable to crunch through though. Crampons highly recommended - microspikes are not safe enough in certain sections under current conditions. We wore microspikes because it's all we had with us today, but we bushwacked around the ice river and hang onto trees in sections for safety and spent a lot of extra time as a result. I won't personally re-visit this trail in winter without crampons. Great mild weather otherwise and a very fun day. We only encountered 2 locals at the bottom of Pumpelly - not a soul the rest of the trail except one or two folks at the summit, and no tracks ahead of us on Pumpelly until after the Cascade Link connection. |
