Mixed bag for sure today: counter-clockwise on the way up we were in Exospikes until the first ledge lookout / alpine regrowth area, where we changed into hiking crampons (Kahtula K-10's) for the duration of the hike, lots of thick ice waterfalls, slippery ice pitches mixed with completely dry rock. The back side, descending from Dickey is still snowier, but mostly thick ice built up on the rock - navigating in hiking crampons was a breeze, but I think micro or exospikes would require much more careful steps. Our hike was before the afternoon rain, so I expect conditions tomorrow will present with softer trails and wet rock along with all the ice flows. After descending below treeline past the icecycle wall, took off crampons and went bare boot to the parking lot as that area of the loop is dry leaves and small ice patches that are easily avoidable. Beautiful, peaceful and super quiet hike - only saw one other hiker all morning right at the start of our loop. Crazy for a Saturday! |
