Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The new parking area on Reservation Road has opened, and it's in good shape. There's a sign at the start of North Mountain Trail on Reservation Road that says "Parking 0.3" and points further down the road toward the new parking area. There are a few new No Parking signs around the start of North Mountain Trail, in some areas that have been common parking areas in the past. Despite the new parking area being open, however, more people were still parked at the old parking area right where North Mountain Trail leaves Reservation Road, including on the side of the road that didn't have No Parking signs. In addition, Tower Road was gated at its junction with Reservation Road, and so a bunch of cars were parked all around that junction (despite the lack of any official parking area at this junction). Reservation Road had some small potholes and small ruts but wasn't too bad (it gets worse past the new parking area).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The one water crossing on this route, just before reaching Round Pond, can be rock-hopped, but the rock you have to leap onto on the other side of the brook is slippery, so be careful.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few large blowdowns, which must have been fairly new since they weren't there last November. Maybe they blew over during the big storm last December? Lots of standing and running water and mud on the trails, but that's not too surprising since it rained last night. Signage isn't great - most of the junctions have signs, but they're not always the most visible and some of the distances given on the signs are contradictory or just plain wrong.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several. If they like mud, they shouldn't have any issues.
Bugs
Bugs: None yet.

Comments
Comments: Snow is completely gone, and there was only one small patch of ice on the entire hike, during the descent off North Mountain (and it was easy to go around). The trails were very wet and muddy due to the rain last night, and the rocks and ledges were also slippery so we had to be careful. Despite the mostly overcast weather, views were better than expected. Saw only a couple of people on North Mountain, but we met at least a dozen people on South Mountain. This was a straightforward, enjoyable hike!
