Comments
Comments: It was a really mixed bag. Starting at 8am there was snow and ice on the ground. Snowshoe tracks were packed and everything was pretty manageable with just microspikes. By 11, the alpine zone snow had already become very soft with snow and ice readily melting. The trail to the summit above tree line included several sections of slush that were ankle deep and unavoidable. After 12pm a lot more snow had melted creating slushy conditions on descent. Many more post holes were visible in the afternoon. Water crossings with snow bridge and ice had melted at lower elevations with higher elevation ice cracking and will become unstable.

The lower half of the trail had mostly melted by 2pm, leaving exposed rock, mud, and tree roots. This week will have some sustained warm weather, so I don’t foresee much of the snow sticking around for too long. Until then, snowshoes are a must.
