Not my hike, hiked with 2 trip leaders and a group of 7 more. Great day.
Springlike conditions. 39-40 deg F. Overcast/fog/low clouds. Snowpack was definitely softening, especially upon Ike's South side, to the extent, that we were walking through running water on steeper sections and soggy, wet snow/water puddles. Postholes, well there are more of them relative to another's report from Saturday 3/2/2024. Most were still avoidable as long as one stayed on trail center. Sadly, given more warm temps and rain in the week ahead, they will continue unbated.
On the way up Crawford to Pierce, the group was split between snowshoes and microspikes (and 1 w/ glacier crampons). At Pierce/Crawford junction remaining 'spikers donned snowshoes. The ride over to Ike was made better. On the ride up/down Ike's 0.3 mile to Crawford junction, nothing, save, perhaps water skis would have helped. The trail was mushy snow, running water, a few bare rock areas, etc. Truly felt like spring hiking in the whites.
We caught some blue skies as we approached Ike, but, almost upon cue, the fog/low clouods curtain descended as we summited. Still, it was nice to see some sun and clear skies, however brief. At the summit, some of us admired the previous work of one individual who, under some duress, must have dissembled the top of Ike's summit cairn to hopefully, once and for all, put an end to the nasty yellow jacket nest there. Guessing this was done since early August 2023 when I was last there.
Thanks to our trip leaders and the whole group that I hiked with today. Great folks and a great hike. Doesn't get any better! :-) |
