Comments
Comments: I got out early to make the most of the nice cold, clear weather. As far as trail conditions, you will experience everything you can imagine and even more. I put spikes on after Surprise on the way up, because I was able to step around most of the ice and stick to crunchy snow or bare trail. Waterproof boots were important in this section. There was also some sneaky black ice on the rocks throughout this section. Above Surprise, the snow got more consistent and I threw Hillsounds on, and they stayed on until about 3/4 mile from the trailhead. I was glad to have a more substantial spike for many ledgy/icy sections. The trail above ~3200 ft. or so is very postholed. In the morning, this was nicely frozen and a couple of us made it through with just spikes without adding to it. On my way down, things were starting to soften up, though, especially the sections in direct sun which were very slushy by 10am or so. Would recommend snow shoes for anyone planning to be at elevation later in the day--mine went for a ride today. Rock spikes might have been helpful for the lower sections; I took my nice spikes off and did wipe out once at the very bottom...
