Comments
Comments: Traffic still light on a Friday (ran into about 50 hikers all day, maybe 20 at the summit from all the various ways up). Parking ($15 car fee) was easily available at the HQ lot with and without reservation (something that’s not the case in the summer). Check in at park store, rent/buy micro spikes, water/snacks if you need them. Nice bathroom facilities, a small museum, and a place to measure the weight of your pack all at the base.
We carried micro spikes with us but didn’t use them as we were able to rock hop or stay on the sides to avoid the many patches of ice along the way. Rest of trail now bare dirt and rock (trail up and down is mostly rocks). Lots of melting water that should be avoided as it was slippery. Seems the mid 30’s to 40’s degree days and recent rains are slowing getting rid what’s ice is left. The White Dot trail up was very rocky and steep, but doable. White Cross trail down was quite muddy with lots of water running over the trail (poles a big help here). We heard someone else talk about faded yellow blaze cross over between White Dot and the top of White Cross to avoid the initial evaluation fall on the top of White Cross. Crossover is on Gaia GPS maps and not very obvious, so use your GPD to locate if interested (it did seem to help).
We got totally clear skies and could see Mt Washington, some of the NH48/52WAVs and ski places in MA. There are many more trails up the mountain from other trailheads, will have to try one of those next time.
