Lower part of Liberty Spring is a mix of open muddy mess, and snow. I wore microspikes, though some would be fine in bare boots. After the last significant crossing, the snow is consistent, soft, and increases in depth as you ascend the trail. I put snowshoes on just above that crossing and kept them on until returning to the same point.
After Liberty, in the col, it's clear there hasn't been as much traffic - just a handful of snowshoers since the last storm. Very soft, deeper, sticky snow. Snowshoes. One guy was barebooting as I returned to Lib from Flume and definitely creating some chaos.
Descending, trails continued to soften up in the sun... one group coming up was churning things up pretty well without snowshoes on. Not to beat a dead horse or whatever, but winter's not over yet even if you're seeing daffodils in your yahd down south. Snowshoes are really the best traction with fresh/melty snow up here. |
