What a great blue sky, windless day for this hike. A winter hike in the morning (21 degree start) and spring hike in the afternoon (49 degree finish). There was a mix of hikers using microspikes and other using snowshoes. We used microspikes for the first mile and a half of grippable ice/bare/bony trail and then switched to snowshoes. We hiked in bare boots for the last mile of the descent. The trail was in good condition and the snowshoe traffic helped tamp it down further. The trail from Starr King to Waumbek was sticky taters but manageable in snowshoes. The descent was much less sticky. |
