Washington was warm, light on the wind, and extremely foggy today. Visibility above 4,000’ was less than 20 feet, so the cog route was a good option. Below Waumbek station, the snow pack is relatively thin. We still used snowshoes on it, but spikes also would have worked. From Waumbek to tree line, the snow became deeper but was generally packed down by skiers. From Jacobs’s ladder to the summit, the snow is pretty soft, loose, and drifted. There are a few short patches of ice, but it’s much more snow than ice up there. We wore snowshoes the entire day and felt not even the slightest bit of desire to switch to spikes or crampons at any point. We were grateful for the railway or wayfinding would have been really tough. |
