| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I was the 2nd car in Ferncroft lot at 7am; when I returned in late evening, there were about a half dozen vehicles, including a couple parked on the outside edge of the lot towards the field. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Wet Trail, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Mud - Significant, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The crossing on Dicey's Mill is bridged by a big tree with a smaller log next to it, as has been there for a while. Despite being above freezing by the time I got there in the afternoon, the water level was well below the logs. |

| Comments: |
Conditions were mixed, with everything from bare dirt to mud, ice, slush, a little power in one spot near Whiteface, and mostly mashed potatoes and packed wet snow. Bareboot from parking lot; spikes once into the snow/ice and up Blueberry Ledge (some black ice in the open rock area); snowshoes from Whiteface summit to Passaconaway and to all the way down to that crossing (at about 2000'); spikes for a while til the snow ran out.
Snowshoes were really helpful for traction and stability in the mashed potatoes and slushy snow; also helps to pack the trail, making it better for everyone.
Very few folks have taken the East Loop up to Passaconaway, though there are some tracks that way. Everyone this day was going out and back on Dicey's to the summit. |
