Easy day as trail was in great shape. Spikes are helpful after the first bare section as there is some ice hiding under a fresh dusting of snow and black ice on rocks. Drifts are very minimal on open sections around Surprise and near the summit, postholing was not an issue with the temps below freezing and the trail very well packed out. Popped on snowshoes about 600 vertical feet from the summit as there was about an inch or so of soft snow and some minor drifting and they were definitely better for traction on the steeper bits, worth having both spikes and snowshoes for sure!
It was pretty windy out today but the trail is very protected once you get past Surprise and into the thicker pines, could barely feel any wind until the top.
Beautiful day and a great way to end the official winter season with some fantastic winter conditions! |
