The hiking conditions were great today. The first mile has thin coverage, but enough that I put my spikes on at the beginning. After the last crossing, at the start of the steep section, the snow gets much deeper and all the rock stairs are covered. There was a couple of inches of new powder over a hard packed trail. After the junction with the Sossman Trail, there are some deep drifts heading to the summit. Snowshoes would have been helpful here, but it was a very short section, so I just kept the Hillsounds on. I had the summit to myself and ran into about 5 hikers on my way down. No views today, but a perfect hiking temperature and ideal snow conditions. This will all change this weekend. |
