Oof, maybe this wasn't such a good idea after a major snowstorm. I wanted to try ascending from the Warner side via the Rollins State Park auto road but it wasn't in the cards today.
Snow started out about 6-12 inches with a light crust over a collapsible base. After the first open outlook at the left turn, snow depths increased to upwards of 18 inches. Due to the crust and depth, snowshoeing was tiring and slow going, and I ended up turning around at 2,350 ft. in order to get down safely.
Mine was the only snowshoe track today, but several skiers, all of whom turned around at the open outlook, had also made a hodge podge of tracks all along the road. I also saw a couple folks in bare boots (?) walking up the road.
If you're doing Kearsarge this week, yes, you will definitely need snowshoes, especially as the temps warm up again. |
