The 1st crossing on the old trail was open but rock hoppable, snowshoes provided just enough rise to keep my boots dry. The 2nd crossing was barely bridged, I could hear cracking sounds even with snowshoes |

One blowdown that's a duck under about .2 up signal ridge |

Unless you can figure out a way to put snowshoes on the pup now isn't the right time to bring the pooch out till the trail gets packed down |

Sawyer river road has seen alot of snowmobile traffic,so that was a welcome sight to not have to break trail up the road, but it is like beach sand so snowshoes worked best for that part.
When I got to signal ridge trail I was relieved to see snowshoe tracks..hallelujah!!! Unfortunately they were trick tracks that only went in about .25 mile before they must of said "screw this s*** we're turning around" Which is probably what I should have done. At that point I knew there was no way I was going to summit, but I wanted to push on so anyone who attempts this hike later in the week might have a shot at actually summiting. It was a schlog even with my 30" snowshoes. I took the old trail to try and shave off a little time (see water crossing note above) I was able to push thru almost 3 miles in to the 2350' elevation mark before I had hit my cutoff time. There is alot of knee to waist deep powder out there, and the only way to get through is with some friends who are all wearing snowshoes. The tracks I left behind me are still very loose as it was only me out there breaking trail today. The snow is so deep and loose right now that without snowshoes you'll literally be swimming in snow trying to get up it |
