Maybe with these ideal conditions: fully supportive snow covering all under brush (including hobble bush). Once it warms and softens the snow, they may posthole and struggle a lot. |

Amazingly ideal conditions. Snow was fully supportive with snowshoes; quite crunchy in the AM but softening after noon especially areas exposed to the sun. Forest was wide open and easy to navigate. Snow covered all the brushy stuff, even most of the hobble bush making for a fast and easy whack. TONS of moose activity in the area. Didn't see any moose, but multiple very new foot prints in the snow; they were post holing nearly 2 feet around the summit. Also, lots of deer and coyote activity.
Started up the abandoned Priscilla Brook Trail, to the point where the trail becomes very grown over (bushiness is short lived). Jumped into the woods to start the bushwhack from that point. We quickly located and followed an old logging road east through an incredible stand of birch trees and some fantastic views. Eventually we turned and whacked north to the west summit through open woods with more great views. Dropped off this summit to the COL.
Headed up to Pliny in more open forest to the easy to locate register, but no views. Backtracked down to the COL, then around the west peak before dropping down to the abandoned PBT. Snow was melting on the trail leaving lots of wet sections to navigate around. And by the time we returned to our cars, the snow was getting sticky, especially in the sun. |
