Parked at entrance to Pillsbury state park; space for about 10 cars. Two were present on 11:30 arrival; both were just leaving after biking in the park. Chatted with one guy returning to his car and he said it was hard to get too far b/c once in snow his wheels just started spinning. |

Lots of water at lower elevations coming off Kennedy. In wet areas, just hopped from tussock to tussock on the old roads to avoiding water. Several locations crossed more expansive water on logs. All was very do-able w/o getting wet feet. |

Not ideal. Lots of low brush and spruce through out that would be in any pups face, and several locations with prickers that could catch their fur, making the hike extra challenging. |

Walked across the road, and jumped in to open woods heading for the summit of Bean. Ended up on a ridge just north of the actual summit. Headed south to the easy to locate RHP through semi-cleared (actually cut) area, with multiple areas of standing water to be avoided. Views of Killington, Okemo. Mt Snow and more were great.
Followed Morgan and Ridge road to the retention pond, then turned into the woods and headed up to Kennedy. Found the cairn and register, but the bottle had multiple bites and the contents were totally soaked. I did not have a jar with me, so decided it did not make sense to leave new register and pencil. Maybe the next person coming to the summit can bring a new jar and contents. Headed south off the summit in open woods, locating an old logging roads. Multiple wet sections throughout at the lower elevations that had to be avoided. Popped out at a gate on Rt 31. Looking behind, the land was signed as a tree farm and private property. There were no signs on the roads in the woods coming from the direction of the mountains. This land may be avoided by heading further south, reducing the road walk. Walked south back to the park entrance. Only car remaining at the 2:15 return.
Snow depth through out never exceeded 6-8", and most was 2-4" with multiple open areas w/o snow coverage at all. But with the up coming storm, these conditions will change after the additional snow (predicted to be 18"). |
