Whereas the snow is melting quite quickly at Whitten Woods in Ashland, it's hanging more at nearby Mt. Prospect in Holderness. There's a good foot or so of snowpack (possibly more in places with legacy snow underneath).
The lower trail was getting packed out, however starting at the relo junction, there's been very little usage (looked like one or two sets of snowshoe tracks). Almost a crust on top (from yesterday's melting) with a mix of granular and powder underneath. Some mouthbreathing Microspiker opted to posthole the abandoned route and then around the summit loop. I opted to out-and-back rather than deal with the ankle-turning postholes.
Snowshoes were the way to go this morning, but the usual mudpit is melting into slush already. These trails will probably need to be put on the shelf again before long to mitigate damage from mud season. |
