Lovely day to feel winter up on the ridge. Falling Waters was already broken out save for a couple inches of snow that fell last night. The ridge is much snowier than I expected. We switched to spikes on Little Haystack, which was definitely the wrong move. We switched back to snowshoes before reaching Lincoln. By the time we got to the hut, there were a lot of people just hiking up to the hut. Many wore spikes so Old Bridle is a bit potholed. We tried to smooth it out for folks. It felt like winter in the ridge, then spring on the way down with lots of slushy snow. For the foreseeable future, snowshoes will be the best traction, though spikes may soon be needed on the ridge once the sun melts the drifts up there. |
