This trail may be on the edge of being abandoned. Although it is marked by an official WMNF sign, there is only one blaze that marks the 'start,' and that is located on the opposite side of a large clear cut. The trail is fairly easy to follow at the lower 2 miles, but in deeper snow the upper mile was really tough to find without GPS.
Wore snowshoes from the get-go, with 3-6 inch deep, unbroken snow, increasing to 12-16 inches with thigh deep drifts above 3k. Took the .2 spur to Waternomee Falls; Pretty cool. Somewhere along the line, I couldn't make out the direction of the trail so decided to give a beeline bushwhack straight to the summit a go. After a steep and deep 300 feet, with no height of land detectable ahead, I decided to turn back. I've made the summit before from the 3-Pond approach; Would've been cool to see with the deep snow but c'est la vie. |
