The upper junction of East Gilford Trail and Round Pond Trail has its sign down as the tree that was holding the sign has fallen. On Piper-Round Pond Link there is a large tree down near the height-of-land on the shoulder of Suncook Mtn. This one required a detour to get around. |

Aside from a few isolated patches, this part of the range is gloriously free of ice and snow. In the dark woods around the radio tower on Belknap there are some icy areas but they are all avoidable. Happy to say that no winter traction is needed here. Views from the fire tower are slowly disappearing due to tree growth.
I dropped off Belknap via Boulder Trail. I've been up this trail but never down, and it was just as fun. Steep and scrambly. Love it! Just take your time and it's fine. Fortunately this south-facing route was very dry.
The only people I encountered all day were at Round Pond, which was lovely as usual.
I hadn't been on the fire road in a long time. A timber harvest in the area of its junction with Round Pond Trail has opened up a nice view of Belknap Mtn.
Overall, conditions were mostly dry. There was some wet ledge to watch out for and any mud was minimal. A beautiful day in the range! |
