Trail conditions were very challenging. Starting at 8:30, the snow was firm so we put on Hillsounds. We had our snowshoes and assumed we would need them later in the day. Snow stayed firm enough with minimal postholing, so we never used our snowshoes. On the return, the Greeley Pond trail was very soft, but it was a short distance and lots of water and mud, so Hillsounds stayed on. Heading up the steep section of East, there were many solid post holes which acted as steps. I was happy for these post holes to prevent sliding. On the return, the snow was very slippery and slushy. We had to take it very slow and grabbing the trees was helpful. Be prepared to slide no matter what traction you have. It is not easy to stay upright on this trail and intentional buttsliding is dangerous with many exposed rocks.
Heading across the ridge, the snow was firm enough for Hillsounds/spikes. We used the chimney by-pass because it was free of snow and ice. The chimney still had some patches of snow, but did not look too difficult. Happy to check these 2 off for spring. |
