This report is a couple days old but conditions haven't changed so it may still be helpful. The bottom of Gale River trail was largely snow-free until it started to climb. Conditions weren't too bad to Galehead and South Twin. We were able to use spikes. From South Twin to North twin was softer because it was later in the day but still not too bad. However, coming down North twin trail was a mess. A slushy top layer over an unreliable base and ankle-twisting boot prints & frequent frozen post holes may have made it the slowest conditions I've ever had on that trail. I was carrying 4 types of traction (rock spikes, hillsounds, hillsound pros, and snowshoes) and yet it was very hard to decide what to use esp on the steep downhill. There was no good solution. My recommendation to others is to lean towards snowshoes if in doubt but make your own track to the side of the boot prints when possible. The snow continues to be deep much farther down than we thought it would. The snow doesn't start to dissipate until you've crossed Little River. |
